I make the Pakuranga toastie pipe from ‘out of the ground’ clay. I make them on a gin press, the manual pressing method of old, using a McLachlan no 18 iron mold. This does sometimes results in a little warpage but makes a great sturdy pipe. Pakuranga, New Zealand, is where I first made the toastie named for its colour. Modern commercial ceramic clay is a combination of the mined separate ingredients.
