The Tinder Box Interactive Education Programme.
Tinder Box is a Social Studies and Technology  resource provider for teachers and  students studying pioneer  pastimes.  Tinder Box was launched in  2004 to meet the needs of school teachers and students who could not visit the resources they needed.   Richard, the  Tinder Box  experienced costumed  presenter visits schools  with interactive curriculum relevant educational activities: Victorian ToysButter Making,    Food for Thought (original artifacts)     Pioneer Transport     and Crafts in support of Toys  in which students make a toy.  The cost of a visit  will vary depending upon school  location and  will be given following a booking inquiry.  Visit Tips and  ideas   Teacher Guidelines and  Frequently asked questions for further information. Teacher, Principal and student feedback  attests to the value of  Tinder Box  visits to schools.

A practical and tactile approach is used via hands-on presentations and  original artifacts, to encourage students to inquire, explore and make decisions, enabling them to interpret the past, helping students to meet their achievement objectives and kindling an interest in pioneer past times.

Why  Tinder Box?
A tinder box is for keeping tinder dry and safe. Tinder is the material that  "catches" the spark that is struck  by fire steel and flint.  Tinder,  having  "caught" the spark will retain a glowing ember and that ember can be kindled into flame with tow and kindling. A  tinderbox , tinder, fire steel, stone and kindling are  the tools  to start a fire.

Tips and Ideas

  1. If  you are studying  Grandparents,  consider inviting Grandparents to the school for the day. Those who  come will have much to tell your students about  the time before they were born.
  2. Purchase a disposable camera to record  the  visit.
  3. Have your students dress in period costume for the day. This need not be  clothes can be adapted, i.e. braces, hats, belts and boots for boys, a long dress for girls with a pinafore.
  4. Consider dressing in period costume for the event yourself.
