The Pioneer Transport Activity

The Pioneer Transport educational resource enables students to gain an understanding of how people and goods were moved from one location to another and contrasts the past with the present demonstrating how difficult it was to move families, household goods, produce and animals, in the early days.

At a time when roads were tracks, communication was poor and there were no powered, vehicles, transport presented a challenge. How pioneers tackled the problem of getting logs out of the forests, the wool clip to market and stores to the farm - these and other transport challenges are what the transport activity addresses.

Different modes of transport are discussed and illustrated  using period photographs showing the way in which transport problems were solved in the past.  For example moving timber out of the forest and across water required two solutions.

Work sheets are provided to be completed during the activity. By  the end of the presentation, the students will have an understanding of transport solutions of the past and be able to compare them with today's transport systems.
