Basic Facts. 1852

Population of  Auckland. The population was between 7000 and  8000 of whom about  4500 occupied the town and its suburbs.

Shipping. 100 vessels from distant ports, upwards of 600 coasters, and nearly 2000 canoes yearly entered the port of  Auckland

Food and Produce.  Chief Taraia and his tribe from the eastern boundary of the Hauraki Gulf brought food to  Auckland for sale in their canoes: pigs, potatoes, wheat, maize, melons, grapes, pumpkins, onions,  turkeys, geese, ducks, fowls, flax and firewood.

Newspaper: The 'New Zealander'  was published in Auckland twice a week chronicling the sayings and doings of the Auckland public for the four preceding days.

Arriving Mail. Letters were available a few hours after the arrival of a vessel,  but a box might take a week to be unloaded.

Reward: A 100 pound reward was offered for anyone discovering a gold field in  the  province of New Ulster (New Zealand)

New: The 'Governor Wynyard'' was the first steamer to be designed and built in Auckland.

Roading: Shortland Crescent, in Auckland , had a macadamized surface (sealed) but no footpath.

Upon arrival: A priority upon arrival  for migrants - having departed the ship, was to  have their laundry done.
