I hand make Shaker style wooden boxes: ovals, rounds, large, medium, small and a few scoops, punnets and the occasional dipper.
There are two exterior finishes: Varnished and my ' Country cottage finish'. The varnished box is in appearance - a new box, which of course it is!.
With my 'Country Cottage' finish the white paint is cracked, the distressed box edges show the under colour.
These new country cottage finished oval and round boxes, punnets and scoops appear 'old.'
The Interior of my boxes are unfinished; to prevent the taint of paint or varnish affecting the contents.

About the Shakers
The ‘ Believers’ as they called themselves, were a breakaway group from the Society of Friends, the Quakers, and were known
detrimentally as ’the Shakers.
Founded in England, they migrated to New York in 1774 and were followed by others in 1775 and 1776.
The Shakers founded settlements in New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Maine , and later in Ohio Kentucky and Indiana.
The Shakers made products which they sold to ‘the World’ their term for those who were not of the Shaker faith.
Shaker products were renowned for being of good quality. The oval wooden box with distinctive ‘Swallow tails’ is synonymous with the Shakers.
Round boxes too were made and many other products: Baskets, seed boxes, bonnets, brooms and furniture to name but a few.
There are no Shakers today – the Shakers took a vow of celibacy and died out.
